I completed my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Molecular Cell Biology in 2006 at the University of Manchester. My PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Manchester involved a 3-year placement at AstraZeneca, investigating the role of time-restricted feeding on hypothalamic activity, hormonal rhythms and metabolism.
I then went on to secure a postdoctoral position investigating the role of Aspergillus fumigatus in airway remodelling. In 2015 I moved on to a project investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying peritoneal fibrosis.
I have extensive experience in supervision of MRes students and guidance of PhD students of respiratory and peritoneal fibrosis projects. I am experienced with delivering undergraduate practical sessions and small group teaching.
My overall research interests are on how epithelial cells contribute to fibrosis. In asthma, the airway epithelium is thought to orchestrate pathological responses to environmental insults, ultimately leading to inflammation and sub-epithelial fibrosis. Asthma is particularly severe in those sensitised to the airborne fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. I am interested in the mechanisms underlying fungal induced airway remodelling responses.
Another area I am interested in is peritoneal fibrosis which can come about in kidney failure patients receiving peritoneal dialysis. This treatment involves feeding bioincompatible solutions into the abdominal cavity to drive ultrafiltration. Peritoneal dialysis and associated infections lead to ‘activation’ of mesothelial cells lining the peritoneal cavity (Mesothelial-to-Mesenchymal transition). My research interests include investigating the molecular mechanisms through which mesothelial cells contribute to peritoneal fibrosis.
