22 Metres Deep

Sian Doyle

I have always loved the ocean. Since I was young I have imagined it as a space of freedom. An escape.

But the ocean is also frightening: mythological creatures of the deep; strange events out of sight of land; lives lost at sea.

My phobia is of wrecks, ship wrecks. The cold, dark rotting remains of a vessel. Lifeless and eerie.  By learning to scuba dive I have been able to explore my fascination and fear of the ocean.

By diving into the darkness, I have been able to face my fears head on and begin the process gradual of overcoming them.
