All about the course

The programme has been designed as two complementary modules (30 credits each). You can complete one module (30 credits) and then chose when to study the second (30 credits); successful completion of the two makes up the PG Certificate (60 credits).

You will attend online teaching sessions for 15 hours per week during each 12 week modules.  Seminars and tutorials are run at 9am and 6pm GMT so you can attend to suit your time zone.

Modules

Security Management Principles & Practice

This module explores practical factors associated with the design concept and application of security measures on a local, regional and global level. An evaluation of specific site characteristics is discussed considering practical risk/security factors. A selection of physical security measures is outlined based on risk/security evaluation. The availability of internal and external resources is also highlighted. The selection of access controls and search aspects of security provides an insight into practical elements of search behaviour. The electronic security element of the module highlights intrusion detection and repel systems. The probability of detection is presented as a major consideration.

Security Management Policy & Strategy

This module explores management principles which form the basis for exploring definitions and concepts of risk and security management. Typical profile and characteristics are discussed which are necessary for risk and security management practitioners. Models of management are outlined which allow high order strategic thinking on the part of organisational leaders and managers from a risk and security perspective.  Consideration is also given to the historic advancement of risk and security theory which is employed in a consistent way. Trends and types of security issues are highlighted, which require the application of appropriate risk/security measures.

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.
