Clearing FAQs

What is Clearing?

The UCAS Clearing process gives you another opportunity to find a course you want to study at a university you’ll love.  If you apply for a course though Clearing and your application is successful, you’ll be able to start university in September 2024. Clearing 2024 opens on 5 July 2024, and you can apply for a course as soon as you have your exam results.

Am I eligible for university Clearing 2024?

You can apply for UCAS Clearing courses if:

  • You’re applying after 30 June 2024
  • You didn’t receive any offers (or none you wanted to accept)
  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
  • You’ve changed your mind about where or what you want to study

If you're eligible to apply through Clearing, we recommend starting your search early. To find out more about the courses we offer, start your search today.

What do I do if I don't get into university?

Getting your results can be stressful, but if you don’t manage to get into your first choice or insurance choice universities, don’t panic. There are plenty of options available to put your mind at rest – including university Clearing.

UCAS Clearing can seem like a scary process, but once you know what to expect, it’s much more straightforward. There will also be lots of people on hand to help, including university staff, tutors, friends and family. Why not take a look at our guide to Clearing for useful advice on the UCAS Clearing process?

Can I apply through Clearing before results day?

If you’re patiently waiting to get your exam results, you might be wondering: can I apply through Clearing before results day?

The simple answer is, you can only use Clearing when you have your exam results, so if you don’t know your grades yet, you’ll need to wait until you receive them before you apply. However, in this situation we still recommend that you start your course search early. It’s a good idea to be fully prepared, so you can avoid the rush on results day.

If you already have your results, you can apply through Clearing now. Learn more in our guide to Clearing.

How many universities can I apply to through Clearing?

You can only apply to one university Clearing place at a time. Once a choice has been selected, you cannot add another, unless you’ve been unsuccessful with the first one. That’s why it’s so important to really examine the courses in Clearing to see which one sparks your interest. Explore our courses today and discover what you could start studying at Salford.

Lloyd's Clearing story

Salford student Lloyd Townsend stood in front of a stone wall at night with river and lit up building behind him.

Lloyd, who applied to study Accounting and Finance through Clearing, tells us about his experience:

“While I applied to Salford in the heat of the moment, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The support I’ve received from my lecturers and other staff has been second-to-none. From helping me find the right accommodation, to getting part-time work in industry, and the guidance I received for my placement applications – it’s been invaluable. My confidence has grown massively and the independence I’ve gained has been amazing. I’ve discovered so much about myself through my university experience, and I would absolutely recommend the Clearing route to anybody.”

Student Placements

Many of our students pursue placements while they're studying here. Watch the video to hear from Broadcast Journalism student Tom, and Wildlife Conservation with Zoo Biology student Laura, whose placements involved working at BBC Radio 5 Live, and spending time in Spain and Malawi.
