Dr Usman Talat
Lecturer in People Management
The past 15 years illustrate a fertile learning curve of my development. As an undergraduate student I explored Information Systems in Business settings. Excited by the prospect, I further pursued this avenue at a postgraduate level through a Masters in Information Systems and another Masters in Research Methods. It was during my exposure to computer systems that my attention shifted to discussions about information systems applicable to wider society. I grew an interest in the functioning and adaptation of humans as systems facing change.
Developing this interest further, my PhD explored philosophical and psychological arguments about emotion as an adaptive response in organizational change situations. I earned a passion for knowledge of human behavior and, in my current position, I am involved in research on intuition as a method of adaptation in organizations. At the same time I continue to lecture on worker behavior in social situations, designed to develop knowledge, tools, and skills for coping in contemporary society, where information prevails.

My PhD explored the role of Emotion in Organizational Change at the National Health Service in the UK. During this time I also participated in a research project on small and medium-sized enterprises in the North West of the UK.
Postdoc, my research interests include Philosophy and Cognitive Psychology of Mind, Evolutionary psychology, and Organizational change.
I would be interested in supervising future doctoral students in the general areas of: Emotions in Organizational Change; Managerial Cognition and Decision Making; Organizational Learning; Leadership; and Managerial Intuition.
