Article 26 Awards

The University of Salford offers a 100% tuition fee waiver and limited additional financial support to assist with study and travel expenses, to three students per year who are:

  • seeking asylum in the UK, or a dependent or partner of someone seeking asylum
  • seeking asylum in the UK, or a dependent or partner of someone seeking asylum OR who has been granted Discretionary / Limited Leave to Remain or some other form of
    temporary status

Please note: Spouses/civil partners must have been the spouse/civil partner on the date which the asylum application was made. Children/step-children must have been aged under 18 on the date on which the asylum application was made.

Applicants must:

  • have been offered a place (conditional or unconditional) on an undergraduate programme at the University of Salford (with the exception of Pilot Study courses and other courses with associated costs) BEFORE applying for the Salford Advantage Article 26 Award
  • by virtue of their immigration status, be unable to access UK Government Student Finance (tuition fee loans or maintenance loans/grants)
  • be able to provide evidence that they sought asylum on arrival in the UK and that their asylum application is under consideration by the Home Office

Priority will be given to applicants who live within easy commuting distance of the University of Salford.

The Article 26 Scholarship award includes a £1000 a year award for travel and course associated costs. This is payable automatically if still on the course in each standard academic year of the course, half in November (£500) and half in February (£500). This is unless, as a result of an asylum application, you (or your parents or spouse/civil partner) are granted indefinite leave to enter/remain in the UK. If this happens, you must inform the University and the award will cease from the start of the next academic year for tuition fee waivers when you would be expected to apply for student finance instead and from the date of the next payment for travel/ course costs awards. You will be expected to pay your accommodation and living costs yourself. We realise that sometimes you may need emergency funds to ensure that you are able to complete your courses successfully. In cases of an emergency you are encouraged to come and see Arron Pile ( in askUS who may be able to help you through a financial crisis.

Note: You are only eligible to apply for the Article 26 Scholarship if you are NOT eligible for Student Finance in 2017/18 academic year. Please apply to for Student Finance if the interim measures announced by the government in 2015 apply to you. Click here to find out.
