Dr Robin Dewhurst
Reader in Music
With an established industry profile before joining the University of Salford in 1998, I continued to undertake a number of roles both in the leadership of the Music Directorate and as Programme Leader of the degrees in Popular Music and Recording, the MA/PGDip Music and, more recently the Doctoral of Musical Arts programme. I have maintained an active role in the fields of composition, arranging and performance, working in band music, commercial/media music, music production and publishing.
I have occupied the role of external examiner in Music for numerous UK HE institutions and am currently external examiner for the University of Chester’s Fd in Commercial Music Technology, delivered by their partners at Mid-Cheshire College. I am Composer in Residence for Stavanger Brass Band (Norway) and am an Honorary Advisor in Music for HM Royal Marines Band Service.
My academic interests focus on music composition, arranging and performance. I am currently Director of Performance in the Jazz and Popular Music area and my teaching spans undergraduate and taught postgraduate modules, including Community Music for the MA Music. I supervise and co-supervise several postgraduate research students each year both on the DMA and PhD programmes.
My research interests marry with my practice-based work in composition and performance. I have many published works for big band, brass band and wind orchestras as well as pieces commissioned by soloists including Brett Baker, James Morrison and Steven Mead.
