Dr Annabelle Waller


Dr Annabelle Waller is the Director of Broadcast Media at Salford’s state of the art digital media campus at MediaCityUK. Here she leads a team of 20 academics delivering UG and PG programmes in media to over 700 students. Programmes in her Directorate include the flagship BA Television and Radio – one of the largest programmes in the University – and the popular cross disciplinary suite of programmes in MA Media Production.

Annabelle is a former Programme Leader of the BA Television and Radio and a former Associate Director International. In her international role she helped set up a number of productive business and partnerships in SE Asia and Malaysia in particular.

Before joining Salford University Annabelle spent 18 years in the creative industries making television and radio programmes for the BBC, ITV and the Discovery Channel. She trained and worked as a journalist before becoming a TV Director and Producer making award-winning documentaries, live studio shows and factual entertainment formats. At the BBC Annabelle ran the Development Unit, generating new programme ideas, and produced and directed a wide range of films for prime time television. She remains passionate about storytelling in all its new digital media forms and the opportunities this provides for the next generation of creatives.


Annabelle continues to supervise Post Graduate and Under Graduate students on their final projects and dissertations.

She has taught and led a wide range of modules in practical aspects of media production including Video Production; TV Documentary; Multi Platform Content Creation; TV Studio ; Collaborative Projects and Advanced Production Practices

Annabelle has also devised and delivered a number of intensive short courses in media for professional CPD clients and international summer schools.

Research Interests

The future of television; the evolution of radio; the creation and proliferation of on-line narrative content; immersive media.
