The Story Begins...

Our story began in April 1967 when Her Majesty the Queen handed over the Royal Charter constituting the University of Salford 'for the advancement of knowledge'.

What a Decade!

Margaret Thatcher visited, The Smiths, New Order and Happy Mondays played at Maxwell Hall, Salford Docks closed but Salford Crescent railway station opened.

Three Chancellors

Between 1987 and 1997, the University was privileged to have the Duke of Edinburgh (1967-1991), the Duchess of York (1991-1995) and Sir Walter Bodmer (1995-2005) as Chancellor

1 Website, 3 New Facilities and Antiques

This period saw the launch of our first website, the opening of the THINKLab, Lady Hale and Mary Seacole buildings plus the Antiques Roadshow was filmed in the University Sports Hall!

The last 10 years...

In the last 10 years we've opened a campus at MediaCityUK, developed the Peel Park campus with new teaching buildings, laboratories and a new student accommodation quarter and found time to honour legends Johnny Marr and Liam Fray. Did we mention that our schools have won Business School of the Year and been named in the QS World Rankings of Top 50 global universities?

Our archive

If you own any historical material, e.g. old photographs, please consider donating (or lending) it to the University, so that it can be preserved for future generations in the Institutional Archive.
