Student finances
How much does it cost to go to university?
The main outgoings that students usually need to pay for are tuition fees and living costs.
For full information about fees and funding for 2013 entry please see our Money 2013 section.
What about tuition fees for 2013?
There are three ways by which students can pay tuition fees:
- By taking out a tuition fee loan
- By paying themselves or arranging for someone else to pay them
- By sponsorship from an employer or other official agency
Students who take out a tuition fee loan will have their fees paid to the University automatically from the student loan company. Students don't have to pay this back until they have finished studying and are earning at least £21,000 a year. If students pay any other way then they need to have arranged to pay the money before they register as a student.
What will my son or daughter need to pay for at university?
Living costs can vary enormously when at university. These include accommodation, travel, study equipment and entertainment.
Many students apply to the Student Loans Company for a maintenance loan to cover this. A maximum of £5,500 is available if a student lives away from home or a maximum of £4,375 if they stay at home.
I'm worried that my son or daughter won't be able to afford the living costs whilst at university...
Students with a family income of under £42,600 will be able to apply for a non-repayable maintenance grant of up to a maximum of £3,250. We also offer a range of bursaries and scholarships which are free sums of cash to help students and they don’t have to be paid back. For more about money matters while at university see our Fees and funding section.
Remember if your son or daughter chooses to study at Salford they will find being based in the north, things will often be cheaper in Salford and Manchester.
How do we apply for student loans and assistance with living costs?
Your son or daughter will need to complete the forms online to student Finance England each year fo their course. you will need to provide evidence of your household income which will determine the financial support available to your son or daughter. Students studying NHS funded courses and Social Work Studies will need to apply to the NHS Business Authority for NHS funding. It’s important to apply early to ensure funding is in place for the beginning of term.
Is there any other financial assistance available?
Additional financial assistance is available for students studying health care courses such as Nursing and Social Work.
Other sources of funding include:
- Disabled Students' Allowance
