Thank you for applying for a place on this course and congratulations on securing a telephone interview. Please read the following instructions carefully, and make sure you allow plenty of time to prepare for your interview.

What will happen at the interview?

The interview will typically take 15-20 minutes. The focus of the interview is on your interest in being a professional counsellor, your experience of helping people and your reflections on your own process of personal development. It is therefore not an interview about your academic knowledge but rather focuses on the experience you will be bringing to counselling training.

Please note, all our offers are conditional on the outcome of an extended CRB/DBS checking process that we organise once students have enrolled in September. If you are aware of any issues that would arise in undertaking a CRB/DBS check it is helpful to discuss these during your interview as this can avoid delays closer to the start date for the course.

Can’t make your interview date

If you have any queries regarding your interview, or if this date is not suitable please contact the enquiries team on 0161 295 4545. Please note that if you do not attend your interview without rescheduling, you may not be offered a second interview date. Please check the details which are held on your UCAS application are correct and if not please update these a minimum of a week before the interview date and time.

Top 10 Interview Tips

  • Number 1

    Be prepared

It might be the scout motto, but it also applies to interview situations too. Look carefully through any material that’s sent to you before the interview, so you know what to expect when you arrive.

  • Number 2

    Plan your journey

Make sure you know where you are going, how you are travelling, and how long it will take. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes early and have our contact details handy in case you need to get in touch.

  • Number 3

    Bring what you need

Don’t forget to bring any documents you might need, including ID, a passport sized photo, certificates or a portfolio.

  • Number 4

    Do your homework

Research your course and our University. Read the syllabus and think about what in particular interests you. Read around the subject you’re applying for – in newspaper articles, the internet, or professional publications. We don’t expect you to be an expert (yet!), but we do want to see your enthusiasm.

  • Number 5

    Get personal

Read over your personal statement. It’s likely that we’ll ask you questions about this in your interview, so review what you have said and make sure you’re prepared to answer questions about it.

  • Number 6

    Practice makes perfect!

Ask a teacher or careers adviser to give you a mock interview. For extra practice, get a friend or someone you trust to ask you more difficult interview questions.

  • Number 7

    Be yourself…

We want to know what makes you tick. Tell us why you’re passionate about your subject and why you want to study at the University of Salford. Remember, we want to hear from you – so don’t swallow a thesaurus, put it in your own words.

  • Number 8

    …but also your best self

Be relaxed but stay professional. Think about what you’re wearing and what it says about you. For professional courses, smart attire is expected.

  • Number 9

    Ask Us Anything

Listen carefully to what the interviewer is saying and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s a good idea to come prepared with a list of questions to ask about your course and the University.

  • Number 10

    Contact us

If you need to speak to us before your interview or on the day, call 0161 295 4545 or tweet us @SalfordUni
