School of Humanities, Languages & Social Sciences
The School of Humanities, Languages & Social Sciences seeks to build, sustain and enhance research into social, cultural, literary, linguistic and policy questions of major real world significance. It specialises in European history, politics, international relations, literature, languages, linguistics, culture and social and criminological research. We have the highest proportion of research active academics of any school in the university. For more than a decade our research has been ranked as having international impact in the UK research assessment exercise. In RAE 2008 staff from the school were submitted to the following units of assessment: English Language and Literature; Social Work and Social Policy; Culture Communication and Media; European Studies, Linguistics and Library and Information Management. More than 70% of our work was classed as international quality.
We have a thriving postgraduate research community and a vibrant graduate school where students undertake research training modules to enhance their research skills as part of their PhD or MPhil degrees. Students in Languages benefit from exclusive use of the Language Resource Centre and there are a number of rooms specially designated for postgraduates, fully equipped with computers and printers. Each research centre hosts a series of seminars where internal and external speakers present their research. In addition a number of workshops and conferences are organised by academics from the school. Two GTA studentships are available in the areas of Politics and International Relations, and Languages and Linguistics or Translation and Interpreting.
