The Success

"The course gave me the confidence to compete for jobs – and win."

Justine Allan, Researcher for BBC Earth, BBC Worldwide

Studying MA Wildlife Documentary Production involved learning from craftsmen already in the industry, which enabled me to grasp the reality of a job in media. Salford allowed me to author my own film, with the right amount of freedom and careful guidance. My tutors had great confidence in my work and submitted my film for an RTS award. Without this support I would not be where I am today. Winning the award was incredible, and it gave me the confidence boost I needed to start applying to media companies, and eventually land my job in TV. I’m currently working on the launch of BBC’s first Natural History YouTube channel with Google, BBC Earth and BBC Worldwide.

"In my job I use everything I learnt at Salford every single day"

Ged Fitzgerald, Chief Executive, Liverpool City Council

I chose Salford for my MBA for several reasons – it was a new and progressive course with a challenging blend of input, integration and application. It also enabled me to learn a lot about excellent private sector organisational experience and thinking and to apply it to the public sector. It was a fundamental asset in shaping my career and continues to help me in leading a major, complex organisation.

"I'm leading a project which is making pregnancy and childbirth safer."

Kathy Murphy, Head of Nursing & Midwifery at Saint Mary's Hospital (Central Manchester NHS Trust).

I studied for an MSc in Midwifery at the University of Salford in 2002 and I am now the Head of Nursing & Midwifery for Saint Mary’s Division at CMFT, which is the largest maternity unit in Manchester. For a number of years I have held a joint appointment with the University of Salford and, in partnership with Helen Hindle, I worked on developing and implementing postgraduate midwifery learning related to complex and high-risk pregnancy. This work won a prestigious award from the Royal College of Midwives for implementing Government policy by reducing the failure of midwives to recognise early signs of deterioration and collapse among women during pregnancy and childbirth.

"My time at Salford gave me the skills to set up my business – which is now thriving"

Euan Kellie, Chartered Planning and Development Surveyor (MRICS), Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) and published author.

After my Masters degree in Town and Country Planning I took a Postgraduate Certificate in Real Estate Development at the University of Salford. My time at the University gave me an acute understanding of how to enhance the value of land and property by way of the town planning process. The flexibility of my study at Salford allowed me to set up my own consultancy firm.

My understanding of town planning and the dynamics of the property industry is reflected in my book, 'Rebuilding Manchester'. Endorsed by the RICS and RIBA North West, the book has been highly acclaimed by many leading property professionals.
