The Potential

"I’m on an innovative course based in a research-led environment."

Alexandra Hughes, currently studying MA Terrorism and Security.

My first degree was in Contemporary Military and International History at Salford. I decided to stay on for my postgraduate study because I had been impressed with the teaching staff and how much they helped me achieve. I chose Terrorism and Security because it developed many of the most interesting themes from my first degree. It is also a subject very relevant to international security, and global threats that we face in the world today.  The staff encourage vocation learning, which gives students the opportunity to experience their chosen profession and make the industry connections that are a crucial part of forging a successful career.

"I’m developing skills that are directly related to my career aspirations."

Zoe Danelli, currently studying LLM International Business Law and Regulation

I came from Greece to study a Foundation Year at Salford, and then stayed for both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. At first I thought the prospect of studying abroad was terrifying, but the environment at Salford was very friendly from the first day I arrived. The lecturers are specialised in their particular fields and they do an amazing job, ensuing that the lecturers are engaging and motivating. In addition, the law facilities and the library are very modern and well equipped.

I am particularly interested in Intellectual Property Law, which was one of the modules on my undergraduate course. I wanted to gain a more in-depth understanding of the subject, and it is now a key focus of my LLM. More generally, I have also developed my communication and writing skills. The lecturers have always stressed how important it is to pack your CV with relevant experience, so I’ve been doing lots of volunteering work, which again increases my employability prospects.

My future goal is get a training contract in a law firm dealing with business and trade law or Intellectual Property Law.

"I’m having a direct influence on how we care for patients with dementia."

Adele Doherty, currently studying MSc Leadership and Management for Healthcare Practice.

I am working as a clinical matron in the Medical Assessment Unit at Fairfield General Hospital (Pennine Acute Hospital NHS Trust) while studying the Masters course. My dissertation is exploring the knowledge, understanding and training needs of staff who care for people with dementia. I feel the course was tailor made for me - I’ve developed my leadership and management skills in a way that is enabling me to influence and impact the care of patients with dementia across the whole Trust. I’m sharing this knowledge with the wider team, and we now have a steering group within the Trust, which is developing the service we offer.

The course has also given me the confidence to apply for external funding, and I recently was granted a Regional Innovation Fund Sharing Award from North West Innovation. This funding enabled us to develop a patient identification scheme for people with dementia. On top of all that, I’ve gained personal recognition in the local press for my work on the care of older people.

"When you are studying a subject as important as cancer treatments, everything about the course has to be right."

Patrick Killoran completed MSc Analytical Biosciences and Drug Design and is now studying for a PhD in designing novel anti-cancer compounds with reduced side-effects for childhood cancer therapeutics.

I was working in industry and fancied a change towards something more academic. I decided on the drug design masters at Salford because it seemed to be the only one in the UK that offered both molecular biology with chemistry. I then wanted a research project that was mainly organic synthesis with biological evaluation. I didn't have to look very far as a sponsored position was advertised at Salford. It was exactly what I was looking for.
