The Knowledge
"I demand my students share my passion for this subject."
George McKay, Professor of Cultural Studies and Director of the Communication, Cultural & Media Research Centre
My supervisory interests broadly cover media and cultural studies, popular music and cultural politics. I have written and edited numerous books, including Radical Gardening: Politics, Idealism & Rebellion in the Garden, which was ‘Book of the Year’ in the Independent on Sunday. I have recently been appointed to a three-year leadership fellowship by the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a programme focusing on community cultures and understanding. I have long been committed to working with community artists and social activists and am hugely enthusiastic about shaping new opportunities in research, knowledge exchange and engagement.
"I’m working in a field that improves lives."
Professor Chris Nester, Associate Head Research and Director of the Health Sciences Research Centre.
I lead a team of staff and postgraduate students who are working to better understand foot structures and how the foot behaves. This knowledge helps us consider how to improve the design of insoles, orthotics, footwear and foot skin products to better manage foot health and foot disease. Our research means we work with UK and EU industry partners and we also have international collaborations, including Shanghai, Sweden and Switzerland. The students from here tend to go on to either research careers or quite senior clinical careers, using the knowledge they’ve gained to enhance their positions in the health service, private practice or another research organisation..
"I challenge myself every day – and I make sure I do the same for my students."
Professor Haifa Takruri-Rizk, Associate Head Engagement, School of Computing, Science & Engineering
I have spent much of my 17 years at the University of Salford researching and promoting science, engineering and technology to females and BME people – demographics traditionally under-represented in those industries.I spearheaded a highly successful national initiative which has encouraged thousands of girls to study science and engineering, and go on to work in the field. I was awarded an MBE for this work in 2010. My research interests include intelligent buildings, networked appliances and remote sensing..
