Swimming champion faces uphill battle for the Olympics

First year Sports Science student Lucy McKenzie was edged out of a potential Olympic place at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow in April.

She finished 7th in the final of the 400m individual medley and qualified for the final in a time of 4:48.65, knocking another second off in the final.

The Stockport Metro swimmer also competed in the 200m medley and the 400m freestyle at the event, which is used to finalise the Great Britain team for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Lucy, from Workington in Cumbria, recently earned her England call-up, being selected to represent Team England at a Four Nations meet in Lignano, Italy.

She has also been training in South Africa while juggling her university studies.
