Student Blog: My Welcome Week
Our first ever student blog is written by second-year Journalism student Nikola Bartosova (pictured below). If you're interested in writing for the student channel please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
When I arrived at the student accommodation I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was classified as a mature student. I was nearly 23 years old when I started the university last year. I used to live in Southport before I moved to Manchester to study at Salford University. I was excited to start a new chapter but I was also concerned how well I would do in the coming year. I was wondering what it’s like to live in the bigger city and if I can make Manchester my home.
The welcome week was a great experience and helped me to settle in at the University. There were lots of activities and events around the campus and it was very easy to make friends because everybody was in the same boat. Everybody was so friendly.
I was going to many events during the welcome week to get to know people, the campus and the whole university. We got lots of discounts and free stuff every single day. I took advantage of workshops and tours that the Library and the University put on. I joined the Christian Union and Shock Radio society. As a journalism student I also got involved with Quays News right from the beginning. I went to Atmosphere Bar during the welcome week many times with students that I have just met the same day. There was great music, games; simply all of us had a good time. I was exploring Manchester and seeing what the city has to offer to students.
A great place to make friends was at the student accommodation. I stayed at John Lester and they were running welcome events for new students to settle in. All the staff working at the reception were friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed meeting people from different countries.
I have also enjoyed the welcome programme of my course. It gave us the chance to meet our lecturers and get to know each other on the course. They had organised many interactive activities for us which were fun. They showed us around our campus where we would be studying and answered any questions or concern that we had.
I am originally from the Czech Republic and University welcome weeks are nothing there compared to the welcome that students receive here in the UK. There is so much going on that you can pick from and go to. It was very easy to get involved and settle in at the university. I was positively overwhelmed by what the Student Union and the university organised for us and all the international students that made us feel welcome.
Welcome week is definitely something not to miss. I am happy that I have chosen to study at the University of Salford. It was the best choice I could have made. Do take an advantage of everything that the university and the Student Union put on for you. Join different societies, there is so many of them that you can choose from. Socialise, meet people, and get involved.
