Prizes up for grabs at Fairtrade Fortnight with SALFOOD
A number of exciting events will be run at your food outlets across campus throughout the duration of the fortnight from Monday 29 February to Sunday 13 March, including the Big Fairtrade Breakfast which will be supported by Tony Rudd.
Tony Rudd, who is a Masterchef 2015 finalist and a passionate supporter of Fairtrade, will join Salford students to highlight the issue of food insecurity faced by millions of farmers in developing nations.
Despite working hard every day to grow the food many of us have for breakfast – coffee, tea, bananas and cocoa – those workers struggle to feed themselves and their families.
The world’s food is produced by up to 500 million small-scale farmers, out of whom 400 million are undernourished.
Tony, who will call upon people to sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers, said: "I'm passionate about supporting Fairtrade.
“The movement is gradually transforming the livelihoods of farming communities in developing nations and it also is a fantastic tool to empower women farmers.”
Tony is known for his dapper bow ties and imaginative takes on classic dishes. He was part of a masterclass on how to start a restaurant which was advertised in The Guardian.
The breakfast, organised in collaboration with the Sustainability Team, will take place at MediaCityUK on 8 March at 8am.
You can book your place here.
Some of the other SALFOOD events throughout the fortnight include:
Our Starbucks coffee is Fairtrade and the first 10 customers who purchase a hot chocolate on both Wednesdays (2nd and 9th March) in either Allerton Internet Cafe or SALFOOD MediaCityUK will get a free chocolate bar.
Maxwell and Allerton Restaurants will also be running a ‘guess the amount of Fairtrade jelly beans in a jar’ contest where the winner will receive the contents.
SALFOOD are giving away a prize for those who tweet a selfie with one of our Fairtrade products mentioning @UoS_SALFOOD and using #salfood.
SALFOOD want to see who can come up with the best six word stories about Fairtrade. Using the hashtag #sixwordfairtradestory, simply tell @uos_salfood your fair trade tale. A Fairtrade prize will be awarded to the winning story. The deadline is midnight, 13 March.
