New students urged to be aware of “phishing” scam

New students should be vigilant when checking their emails, following the news that they are the target of a new wave of “phishing emails”.

The email in question purports to be from your university’s finance department and claims you have been awarded an education grant as part of a student support programme.

If students input their details, they will be taken to a spoofed website where they are directed to type in their online banking credentials.

Advice from the City of London Police claims that you should be alert to poor spelling and grammar, and that you shouldn’t reply, open any attachments, or click on any links of emails that you suspect to be fraudulent.

If you think your bank details have been compromised and/or you have lost money due to fraudulent misuse of your cards, you should immediately contact your bank and report it to Action Fraud.

Suspected attempts should be reported to phishing@slc.co.uk or to Action Fraud.
