MA student in line for national journalism award
Gabriella Lee, a MA Journalism student, has been shortlisted for a national news journalism award.
The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) shortlisted Gabriella for the NCTJ News Journalism award, after she submitted a portfolio of three news stories.
Gabriella had two of the stories she submitted published in local newspapers, the Wigan Observer and the Bolton Evening News. One of the stories looked at the targeting of young women in a local bar in Wigan, while the other uncovered a hidden homeless population in Bolton.
Gabriella’s other story was one she had submitted for an assignment. This explored the rate of suicide and depression amongst elderly people and the help AgeUK provide for those in distress.
Gabriella will find out if she has been successful in a ceremony at the Library of Birmingham – the city’s new landmark £188m building.
She said: “I was surprised to find out I'd been shortlisted as I didn't think I would be and had submitted on the last day of entries.
“My course helped a lot, by helping me to improve my writing of news stories. One of the pieces I submitted was for one of my courses.”
