Edinburgh International Television Festival offers free training for Salford students

Graduating this summer and determined to start a career in the television industry? Our relationship with The Edinburgh International Television Festival secures six students the chance to take a free intensive introduction to working in the TV industry, run by the world’s leading TV festival.

Held every August, the Edinburgh International Television Festival celebrates innovation in the industry, holds mass debates about the industry’s future and draws some of the world’s biggest stars, with past attendees including Kevin Spacey, Ricky Gervais and Simon Cowell.

With such a prestigious reputation, their four day intensive training course called The Network is a great way for anyone interested in a career in the TV industry – whether you’re studying Broadcast Journalism, Midwifery or Zoology – to learn from the best.

The four-day intensive training will provide you with a real taster of what it’s really like to work in television, giving you the chance to mingle with the cream of the British TV industry and make loads of new contacts as well as learn lots of practical TV making skills from top programme makers. You’ll also be paired with an industry mentor, who will get you access to exclusive alumni events and job placements, so it’s no wonder that past attendees have hailed it as "four of the best days of my life".

If you want one of our guaranteed six spaces on the training, then getting your application spot on is vital. To help you with this, we have arranged for Campbell Glennie, The Network’s Director of Talent Schemes, to share his tips and advice about the application with you on Thursday 17 March. Campbell will hold a morning session in Peel Hall from 10.30am and an afternoon session at MediaCityUK from 3.00pm. To submit your application click here

There is also an evening of TV chat and industry networking at your MediaCityUK campus on Thursday 17 March. Here, you can find out more about the Network and hear from previous alumni. Free drinks will be available. Get your free ticket here

Campbell Glennie commented: “The Network has helped thousands of people in the last 25 years start their careers in television. Via four intensive days in Edinburgh in August and a continuing development programme of mentoring and a paid work placement scheme, The Network demystifies the television industry and will open doors for you to start a career in television.”

Beth Hewitt, Director of Conversion for the School of Arts & Media, commented: “The Network offers amazing opportunities for all University of Salford students, graduating this year. People working within the media come from a range of disciplines and The Network can support you to pursue your area of interest.

“Campbell Glennie will provide insight into the scheme and how to apply in a number of sessions across the day, both on main campus and at MediaCityUK. All applicants will receive valuable feedback, providing a great opportunity for personal development before graduating and entering the world of work.”

Applicants must be able to attend the Network in Edinburgh from Tuesday 23 August to Friday 26 August. Applications close on Monday 4 April.
