Designed and delivered by the University of Salford Business School, the Director Development Programme is a 5-day course that prepares new and experienced Directors to excel in their role. The course features experienced tutors who have theoretical and practical knowledge of what it takes to become  successful  in  and  out of the boardroom. The course is a fast track and intense insight to the role of a Director.

Overview

Directors provide strong leadership to an organisation and are legally responsible for their organisation success, delivering value to shareholders.


This accelerated five-day Director Development Programme run by Salford Business School and their experienced tutors will allow Directors to become aware of their legal obligations in running an organisation and allows them to understand more about what makes a successful Director.


Delegates will have an option to obtain ILM Level 7 qualification following the course completion. They will be able to implement the knowledge straight away, so that the organisation will see immediate results.

Do I have the right profile?

Participants typically have at least four or more years of work experience and tend to be mid to upper level managers (with or without direct reports), coming from every discipline, size and type of organisation, including private companies, not-for-profits and government services. Note that participants will be joined in groups with peers with different expertise to maximise learning exchanges.

Do I need qualifications to enrol?

The Director Development Programme is open to all levels of experience and will include participants with a diverse range of professional backgrounds including engineering, project management, human resources, operations, sales and many more. A Bachelor or master’s degree is not a prerequisite for enrolment, and some find this programme an excellent refresher course for a degree past 7 years.

What is the homework load?

As the programme is run over an intensive 5 days, whilst home work may be required during the period it is taking place, there will be no subsequent requirements that will eat into your valuable time.

How challenging is the Director Development Programme?

The emphasis is on helping you reach your peak of excellence and accelerating your career goals. Directors use this programme to develop strategic management skills and network with exceptional peers from a variety of industries.

How soon should I enrol?

Programmes often fill up one or more months in advance, so we strongly advise you to register early. Payment must also be completed before you attend, with joining instructions sent about 2 weeks in advance of the start date. Only then is your position secured on the programme.

FINANCE

  • Understand what the Director’s role is with finance, and what are the legal responsibilities                    
  • Review and understand the most common financial reports and statements – what they mean and what they are telling you?    
  • Be able to use basic financial ratios to assess the health of an organisation and to be able to make key strategic financial decisions
  • Assess your organisation’s governance and control – what are the risks and opportunities and how effective your finance team are
  • Learn how to raise funding and use / manage debt to the organisation’s advantage

DR PHYL HUGHES, Psychologist, Coach, Culture Change Specialist

Phyl is a bright, engaging and enthusiastic coach. She works with a range of mid to top layer leaders in the UK. Her particular focus is on strategic alignment; ensuring leadership behaviours are driving the strategy of the organization forward.

Phyl’s background enables her to have one foot in personal development and coaching and the other in the strategy of an organization.

She started her career in UK business schools. She gained her PhD in the Psychology of Strategic Decision Making from Cranfield Business School In 1998. Following that she held full time positions designing and delivering courses in personal development and strategic behaviour inside organizations.  She  worked worldwide on MBA programmes and executive development.

Phyl proved to have a particular flare for the executive development side of her work and was encouraged to fly solo in 2008. Since then she has run her own consulting practice: Strategy Explorers. The unique proposition of Strategy Explorers is that Phyl and her partners enable clients to join up the  strategy  of their organization, their culture and the leadership behaviours that are needed to support it.

In recognition of the high quality of executive development she is able to offer, Phyl held a Visiting Professor position at Strathclyde Business School. Her background in and continuing association with knowledge creation in the university sector means she brings a wealth of knowledge to her group  and  one-to-one relationships. Being coached by Phyl is a multi-faceted growth experience.

She has recently begun to explore non-executive roles in the not for profit sector and has held a position on the board of a UK Cathedral as a Canon.

Sectors Phyl has worked in include FTSE 100 Engineering Firms, Financial Services, UK Public Sector, International Motor Industry and the Not for Profit Sector.

JACKIE NJOROGE, Director of Strategy at University of Salford &Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust

Jackie joined the University of Salford in 2016 as its first Director of Strategy. Prior to this, she led the Strategic Planning and Management Information team within MMU, with a mandate to help change the strategic planning direction of the University.

A qualified management accountant, Jackie had a career in financial planning and management within the steel industry, before moving into Higher Education in 2003, where she eventually moved into Strategic Planning and Performance, successfully leading the team to an industry award for the implementation  of  Northumbria’s business intelligence solution.  Jackie is also Deputy Chair of the Higher Education Strategic Planning Association.

JULIE CHARGE, Director of Finance, University of Salford & Non Exec Director of Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust

Julie Charge has been the University's Director of Finance since December 2014, having joined the University earlier that year as the Associate Director.

Before joining the University of Salford, Julie held a number of senior management financial roles in the private sector. She was the financial lead in the commissioning of two newly built hospitals in Bath and Reading Hospital under Circle Health Ltd, subsequently becoming the Head of Finance for both  of  them. Prior to this she was instrumental in the development of a joint venture company before holding Finance Director and Commercial Director roles within that company - Innserve Ltd.

She also worked for Scottish and Newcastle (now Heineken) for 15 years in a number of financial roles across the company.

MIRAGE ISLAM, Digital Marketing & Transformation Consultant

Mirage Islam started his marketing career in financial services before moving into FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods), and then joined one of the UK’s largest mobile internet portals in 2000.  He spent 7 years with Sky, initially leading its first Partnership Programme, before becoming Future Media Lead with Executive sponsorship.  Mirage has since worked with Channel 4, Sainsbury's, TalkTalk, Ernst & Young, Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis Worldwide as a Digital Marketing Strategist and trainer. Formerly Chair of the Learning and Innovation Group at the British Interactive Media Association, he is passionate about inspiring future talent. He is a Fellow of the RSA, Industry Fellow Salford Business School, lectures at leading Universities and advisor to CEO's of multi-nation corporations.
