Midwives and other healthcare professionals are relatively unaware of the processes involved with Stem Cell collection and the legal and ethical requirements. Additionally with “Delayed Cord Clamping” now being advocated there seems to be confusion around the collection of blood for stem Cell storage.
This study day will aim to demystify this strategy and will support future best practice and maternal choice.

On 5 January 2015, Public Health England for the NHS New-born Blood Spot Screening Programme, announced it was expanding to screen all new-born babies in England for four additional rare but serious conditions: maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), isovaleric acidaemia (IVA), glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1) and homocystinuria (HCU).
Testing for these conditions, leading to early detection and treatment, will prevent those babies affected from dying or being severely disabled for the rest of their lives. Other independent health companies are offering even more tests. Additionally Stem Cell collection is beginning to gain popularity amongst mothers and some NHS providers are offering this but again it is the independent sector that are driving and developing this service.
Within England only approx. 1% of mothers engage with this but across Europe it is around 33% and figures are rising. Stem Cell storage can help to protect the family from over 80 conditions and diseases, including Leukaemia, Anaemia, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Impaired Immune Systems (Stem Cells UK 2014).
