NHS Property Conference

“NHS land and property is an important enabler of transformation in the health system and beyond, yet its potential is under-appreciated. This can and must change. By adopting a more strategic approach, the NHS can generate money to reinvest in new or updated premises for the benefit of patient care” – Government Response to the Naylor Review, 2018

The current NHS Estate is valued at £42bn, with a replacement cost of £80 – 90bn. In pressured financial times, this presents a significant challenge for the NHS. Reducing the variation in the quality, cost and effectiveness of its property and ensuring the estate is fit for purpose in a rapidly digitising world requires a strong and sustainable infrastructure. In response, NHS Improvement created an Estates Team and established an NHS Property Board to reflect the needs of the changing NHS Estate, to respond to the Naylor Review, to begin working more closely with NHS England and to support trusts to save £810m by 2020/21.

The lack of capital funding for maintenance and improvement presents an equal challenge across the NHS. In their response to the Naylor Review in January 2018, the government pledged to providing £3.9 billion of additional capital by 2022/23, which includes £2.6 billion to support STP estates transformation plans, in addition to £425 million announced earlier this year and £700 million to tackle critical maintenance issues and support turnaround plans in struggling trusts.

At the same time, maximising NHS buildings and land and utilising the existing estate more effectively offers significant opportunities. The conference will offer case studies to help you understand how could apply to your organisation. To be successful, NHS Trusts must be forward-thinking and supported to embrace change through their transformation plans to create estates and facilitates that are cost-effective and responsive to patient needs for the long-term.

Delegate feedback from our previous NHS Property Conference includes:
