The Sustainable Housing and Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) is a multiple award-winning research and consultancy unit based within the School of Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and Social Science.
Our work navigates through complex issues in the built and human environment and aims to address societal issues, providing an evidence base for effective policy making at the local, regional, UK and European levels.
Our team combines a range of backgrounds including social policy, urban geography, housing management, psychology, sustainability, health, social care and social work. As applied social scientists we offer a wealth of expertise and provide research and consultancy services under three core themes:-
Across these three core themes, we have a particular specialist understanding around engaging with marginalised individuals and communities; for example, members of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities (including asylum seekers/refugees, migrant workers, Gypsies, Roma and Travellers); older people; and people with complex needs, including people experiencing homelessness, financial exclusion, mental health issues, and drug and alcohol issues.
