Course Summary

This module is part one of the Postgraduate Certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

This module will explore:

  • Theories of cognition, behaviour, affective development and learning
  • Ethical issues in using CBT with different client groups, e.g. children, vulnerable adults
  • Research into the outcomes of CBT as an intervention compared with other approaches
  • Utilising CBT with anxiety and depression
  • An introduction to working with specific issues e.g. addiction, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, phobias, and trauma.

Entry Requirements

An upper second class honours degree in psychology or other health/social care related discipline, e.g. counselling, health sciences, nursing or an honours degree (in any discipline 2.2 or above) and a diploma in counselling or it's UKCP or BPS equivalent.

Appropriately experienced applicants will be considered in line with the University's APL procedure.

In addition applicants are required to be currently working/volunteering in health care practice either as a counsellor/psychotherapist or in a health and social care related discipline. You will be required to use CBT skills within your work/voluntary placement setting and will need to access a minimum of one 20 hours supervised practice.

We welcome applications from students with alternative qualifications and/or significant relevant experience, subject to approval through a process of Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

Reflective essay 3,000 words 50%

Peer and tutor assessed practical in-class assessment of an evaluation of the utilisation of CBT - 30 minutes 50%
