Prestigious national award for acoustics professor

The University of Salford’s Professor Yiu Wai Lam, has received a prestigious national award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to acoustics.

Professor Lam was presented with the Rayleigh Medal – the Institute of Acoustics’ premier award – at the Acoustics 2012 conference in Nantes, France this week.

He has been an influential figure in acoustics for the past 25 years, working in environmental noise, industrial noise and building acoustics, and is internationally recognised for his research and expertise in this field.

His current research focus is on sound propagation and modelling techniques in room acoustics.

Currently Associate Head of Research in the School of Computing, Science & Engineering, Professor Lam joined the University in 1988.

He successfully led the establishment of Salford as a lead partner in the BBC Audio Research Partnership and, in 2010, the BBC rated Salford as top overall for broadcast audio research in UK universities.

The Institute of Acoustics has awarded the Rayleigh Medal to Professor Lam in recognition of his “outstanding engineering research, teaching and research leadership”.
