Course Summary

The Education Leadership MBA has been designed to equip experienced education managers with the knowledge and skills required to lead a modern academy or group of academies. The programme will give you an understanding of operational and marketing issues that face those who lead and manage academies. Fully accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the AMBA accreditation is your guarantee of the quality of the programme, the teaching and the outcomes.

The Education Leadership programme has been designed for experienced education managers to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to lead a modern academy or group of academies. You will study the three core modules that make up the Salford MBA; the fourth module, Executive Education, is a specialist module that looks at contemporary issues in Education management.

Delivered in a blended format, this programme combines online and on campus study and includes a work-based consultancy project and an international study visit.  You will draw on your previous management experience to join in online and face to face discussion with tutors and fellow students, then use the scholarship and research to reflect your learning back into the workplace. Our broad range of modules and unique business partnerships make this programme an ideal option for ambitious executives who are seeking to improve their knowledge across a full range of advanced skill sets.

For two days each month, you will come to Salford for intensive study.  During this face to face time on campus, you will meet both academics and fellow students.  While here, you will follow a study programme but this is also your opportunity to share your experiences, learn from your peers and develop your professional network in a supportive and collaborative environment.

"The Salford MBA has completely changed my way of thinking and attitude towards work. It has provided me with a new insight into how to view and run a business from top to bottom and to appreciate all aspects of it."

Teaching

https://youtu.be/5LgV6K32cfY

Our teaching combines academic expertise with real-world experience so that your learning is practical, relevant and education-focussed.  The programme is delivered by academics who are experts in their field but who also have worked in – and maintain strong links with – industry. You will learn through a combination of online lectures, online seminars and on campus tutorials, supplemented by a range of learning activities such as industry visits and guest speakers. The course includes a one week international study trip to develop your awareness of national and international business.

There is a strong emphasis on active learning. Prior to each online lecture, students are provided with videos, examples and suggested readings via the virtual learning environment (VLE); these form the prior knowledge around which the different activities will focus each week.  In the final semester, you will work on a Business Innovation Live Project, acting as a consultant to your own or an external organisation, providing advice and solutions for a real business problem.

Assessment

Normally, each module involves two pieces of assessed work. Types of assessment include: essays, assignments, exams, multiple-choice tests, online tests, group reports and portfolio work.  The Business Innovation Live Project is assessed through a final report and presentation.

Some more student testimonials:

Alex Rossi, MBA student 2018

"I wanted to express my thanks to Doctors Eskandari and Yazdifar for their tuition and support. One on one tuition can be very testing for both parties, but I have really enjoyed it and hope they have too. These gentlemen have amazing knowledge and a real ability to dispense that knowledge with passion and bring the subjects to life."

Samuel Otigba, founder, Treadler app, MBA 2014-15

“[Doing an MBA], for me was the opportunity to create my dream company and watch it grow.  Through the aid of our wonderful tutors and Business School’s administration team my dream is being actualised.”

Lava Mohamad, Management Accounts Assistant, Sofidel, MBA 2104-15

“What I liked the most about the MBA was that we had many students from different backgrounds and different age groups. I have learned a lot from my fellow colleagues as they had different views about the business world and this was very interesting; we had doctors, pharmacists, senior project managers and many more. I particularly enjoyed the case studies as we were put in groups and had to work together and try to appreciate each other’s ideas.”

David Roberts, Specialising in the design and delivery of immersive business and management learning experiences, MBA cohort 2008-2009

"We experienced a series of practical masterclasses delivered by tutors with both academic and real world experience across the full spectrum of management topics. These masterclasses continued throughout the year and were supplemented with talks from external practitioners and numerous visits to businesses and organisations in the north of England. During the final semester we were required to undertake a consultancy assignment with a real business. This was a wonderful end to the programme and enabled me to turn my learning experience into practical application."

Le Tuan Hung, MBA cohort 2007-2008

“A particular advantage of the school that I think is remarkable is that the school has close relationships with businesses in many industries, thus in the second semester of the MBA course we got a chance to work as MBA interns at businesses in Greater Manchester. I and other classmates in my group went to work for a large factory. We were treated as employees of the company, assigned to projects that the company was working on and we carried out these projects according to the task schedules. We worked in real jobs like true company employees in a highly professional working environment.”

Ged Fitzgerald, Chief Executive, Liverpool Council, MBA 1995-1996

"I chose Salford for my MBA for several reasons - it was a new and progressive course with a challenging blend of input, integration and application. It also enabled me to learn a lot about excellent private sector organisational experience and thinking and to apply it to the public sector. It was a fundamental asset in shaping my career and continues to help me in leading a major, complex organisation."

Links with Industry

The University of Salford grew out of the institutes of the late 19th century that provided a talented, technically proficient and professional workforce to support the UK’s rapidly growing industries. In the 21st century, this still holds strong. Whilst industry has changed significantly, the need for industry-focussed education is equally relevant today.

Having celebrated the University’s 50th anniversary in 2017, we take the principles that have stood us in good stead - Industry, Integrity and Initiative - and redefine them to take us forward.

In 2016, the University of Salford introduced its Industry Collaboration Zone programme to capture, share and expand existing best practice. Industry Collaboration unites colleagues, students, industry and communities through shared knowledge, learning and innovation. By pioneering exceptional industry partnerships, we lead the way in real world experiences, preparing students – at all levels - for life.

Industry Collaboration offers a real-world approach to learning with a flexible, industry-informed and research-based curriculum co-created by the University and industry. Learning is authentic, active and collaborative; that is, it involves taking risks, learning from both success and failure. Our students are prepared for the real world by explicitly developing practice and self-awareness, communication skills, team-working abilities, and critical thinking skills.

For Salford MBA students, this takes the form of industry-informed teaching from academics who combine subject expertise with real-world experience. This is supported by guest lectures, real case studies and business trips. These take on a global aspect during the overseas trip which was in  Bogotá, Colombia in 2017 and 2018.

You can read about the experiences of our MBA students in Colombia over at the Made in Salford blog.

Recent business trips – normally involving tours of factories and other facilities, as well as discussions with company experts and managers – have included:

  • A-Plant, Warrington
  • Bentley Motors, Crewe
  • Nutrition Group PLC, Blackpool

PARNTERSHIP WITH MANCHESTER STORM

As part of the University’s partnership with Manchester Storm elite ice hockey team, we are delighted to welcome appropriately qualified Storm players to study for their MBA.  Over the last two years, 6 students have worked with us, developing their own business skills and sharing their sport experience with fellow students. Read about how they got on.

“The year at Salford Business School has been a lot of hard work and some long hours but it’s all worth it, to get through one year and get the MBA and learn a lot of knowledge for our future.” - Luke Moffatt, Manchester Storm

“The partnership between the Storm and the University has been excellent for my players both on and off the ice.” - Ryan Finnerty, Head Coach Manchester Storm
