This course will equip you with the knowledge and expertise needed to plan, organise, secure and manage resources to bring about the successful completion of projects to client’s expectations and satisfaction. It enables you to recognise the significance of process, technology and people to the success of projects; to more effectively lead, organise and plan projects; to analyse corporate practice and implement highly effective strategies for change.
This course is delivered at Colombo School of Construction Technology (CSCT), in Colombo, Sri Lanka and taught by academic staff from the University of Salford UK.

This course can be studied full-time on campus or part-time by distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.
The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a Dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules. For the award of PgCert the completion of two specified taught modules is required. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed mostly through coursework, there are no exams.
You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters on campus, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required for project management in construction. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.
A 30 credit taught module is studied per semester. Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions. In the final two semesters you undertake a Dissertation worth 60 credits which is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.
This module allows you to develop a research proposal with clear aims and objectives related to your study. You will undertake critical analysis of existing research and engage in various forms of recognised research in order to produce a sustained, sophisticated, and logical argument in the form of a written dissertation.
Applications for this course must have a minimum of a second class undergraduate honours degree in a relevant discipline, or a minimum of a second class undergraduate honours degree in an unrelated discipline and significant relevant work experience within the built environment, or a recognised appropriate professional qualification such as RICS or CIOB.
We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.
Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 (no element below 5.5) is proof of this.

This course is for you if you have a desire to enhance your current knowledge base and develop your career in the area of construction project management. You will have a strong academic and/or professional background in the built environment, enabling you to build on the experience you already have. Strong leadership skills and good knowledge of construction processes are a must.
On-campus study comprises lectures, tutorials and project work.
Lectures introduce the core knowledge for each module. Tutorials provide a forum for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors, and the project work is your chance to employ research and other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks.
If you’re studying by distance learning, you’ll enjoy access to an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors with student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. Learning is driven by real-world problems with application to your workplace and job role.

Dr Chaminda Pathirage
Course Director: MSc Project Management in Construction
Chaminda is the course director for MSc Project Management in Construction at the University of Salford. He also lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in the fields of construction management and financial management. Chaminda has worked in several RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) funded research projects on knowledge management and facilities management, and has developed his specific research interest in exploring the role of knowledge management in the project management context.
He is a graduate member of the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Sri Lanka (IQSSL), a probationer member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and a student member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The construction industry has witnessed a marked change over the last few years, increasingly moving away from the traditional approach to project management in construction to a more integrated approach, fusing together the design and construction elements where once they would be viewed as separate management disciplines. Therefore a graduate entering the construction management arena must be well equipped to cope with the demands of the construction industry and its expectations of project management. The School of the Built Environment has 100% graduate employment rate for Project Management in Construction, with graduates employed in a number of related fields including the built environment, civil engineering, heavy engineering, offshore and petrochemical industries.
The full Masters award is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), allowing exemption from their academic entry requirements.
Guest lecturers from industry with expertise in relevant areas are invited to give lectures throughout the duration of the course. Site visits are organised each year in co-operation with local construction companies, these give full-time students the opportunity to visualise what you learn and apply it to a real-world context.
