Course Summary

This module focuses on the professional and ethical issues involved in vocational and occupational rehabilitation practice. These include, for example, report writing; moral dilemmas; legislation and policy; quality assurance; culture; and relationships between health, work and wellbeing.

You will develop as a reflexive practitioner willing to challenge and implement evidence based practice; demonstrating a critical awareness of current and future issues in occupational and vocational rehabilitation.

You will further your understanding of the theoretical principles and research evidence, using reflective processes  to further your own personal development planning, continuing to enhance your practice going forward.

Entry Requirements

One of the following:

  • an honours degree – normally a 2.2 or above,  in a relevant subject
  • an equivalent academic or professional qualification from the UK or elsewhere

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

Applicant profile

Applicants should be enthusiastic individuals seeking to develop their critical thinking skills and keen to challenge and improve practice. They may currently work in teams or independently, having different roles within occupational and vocational rehabilitation. But no matter how large or small they see their role, they must want to improve their ability to learn and collaborate effectively in practice; to provide co-ordinated and integrated services that meet the occupational and vocational needs of those they are working with.We are looking for individuals who are keen to use research evidence to develop their knowledge and their functional and intellectual capacity in this complex and specialist area.

Teaching

The course is delivered through:

  • Face-to-face taught sessions on-campus
  • Online learning through our virtual learning environment

You will explore the course material via lectures, engagement in tutor and peer-led group work, and study in our virtual classroom. You will also receive support in setting up and familiarising yourself with relevant IT and media resources.  

You will also have the chance to participate in academic tutorials via email, telephone or Skype. And you will have full access to our online library resources and other student support services.

You will also be assigned a personal tutor who will act as a mentor and guide for the duration of your journey through the programme.

Assessment

The assessment for this module comprises of two parts:

Critical reflection and a PDP (50%)
Verbal presentation of a critical analysis of a relevant aspect of practice in occupational and vocational rehabilitation

Postgraduate Staff Profile

Jenny Ceolta-Smith (Module Leader) Jenny has a background in designing, delivering and managing vocational rehabilitation interventions.  She is an occupational therapist and lecturer at the University of Salford. Her recent PhD research titled: ‘Supporting claimants’ health: A role for the Personal Adviser?’ is centered on the way in which claimants’ health-related needs are understood and addressed within the new Welfare-to-work era. Jenny is interested in health-related support provision within Government employment services and how allied healthcare professionals work within these services.
