Course Summary

The non-credited MSLAP module focuses on the development of practical skills to aid you in the support of students and learners within the clinical environment. During this module you will explore key concepts and theories in relation the support of effecting learning and assessment in practice. This module will then guide you in the implementation of these within you own professional practice and promote the development of core mentorship skills. There is a strong emphasis on the practical application of the skills and knowledge you will develop throughout this module and thus you will be required to reflect on your implementation of these new skills in practice.

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

English Language Requirements

International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.5 (no element below 5.5) is proof of this.

Suitable For

This module is suitable for all healthcare practitioners who have an interest and passion in supporting the development of new healthcare practitioners. You will have excellent communication skills and an eagerness to learn and challenge existing assumptions and ideas. Reflection on your own practice and that of those around you forms a key component of this module so you will need an open minded, mature and respectful attitude.

You must be be a practicing healthcare practitioner with access to students of the same profession.

Nurses and midwives will need to be 12 months post qualifying.

Teaching

This module consists of five distinct blocks of study that focus of different aspects of the support of learning and assessment in practice. These blocks are presented via an online learning environment and include, written, audio and video components to enable you to explore the key concepts and theories. Guided tasks then allow you to begin to incorporate these into your practice and generate evidence of your achievement as you progress.

The module can be undertake via three different routes with a varying amount of face-to-face support as noted below:

  • Completely online
  • Guided online (2 half-day study days)
  • Blended (3 full-day study days)

Full academic support is given for each module and can be access either face-to-face or via phone or Skype.

Assessment

Assessment for this module takes the form of a portfolio in which you will demonstrate how you have met the domains associated with the support of learning and assessment in academic practice. This will consist of a range of different types of evidence but with a strong focus on the real-world application of mentorship skills.

Employability

Career Prospects

This module will enable you to join your local register of live mentors and act as a mentor for pre-registration students of your profession. It will also form a solid base upon which to develop your teaching and learning expertise towards a practice teacher award or a career in practice education.
