Course Summary

You can take this course as a single module for continuing professional development or as part of the MSc Midwifery and MSc Nursing programmes.

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

English Language Requirements

International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 (no element below 5.5) is proof of this.

Suitable For

The module is open to all health care staff who are required to support students and learners in practice and have a BSc degree (normally at 2.2. or higher) or evidence of recent level 6 study.

Teaching

The module will adopt a blended approach involving a suit of online resources supported by tutor led face-to-face sessions in order to explore and develop the application of core mentorship skills. The content of the module will encourage student participation at all times through a range of different approaches such as group activities, online interactive materials, simulation, role-play and case study scenarios.

Assessment

The assessment for this module is in two parts. The first component consists of a portfolio of evidence in which students demonstrate their ability to support the learning and assessment of learners in practice. This will require the development of a range of individual items of evidence in conjunction with their practice based mentor supervisor. The second component of assessment will consist of the delivery of a simulated scenario in which the student is expected to demonstrate the application of mentorship practice.

This module can be taken as stand-alone for the purposes of continuing professional development. On completion of this module you will be equipped to undertake the role of mentor and fulfill the requirements of your professional body.
