Course Summary

On this course, you will develop a professional knowledge of visual and other methods of fashion communication, across a range of media.

Course Details

MA/PgDip Fashion Innovation: Communication will develop you into an expert professional practitioner and creative and critical thinker in the context of fashion. Once you graduate you will be able to respond to emerging demands and developments and to lead innovation in the sector. The course aims to:

  • Develop advanced, critical understanding of research methods in the context of fashion and to understand how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research
  • Establish an environment where you can can explore and deepen your understanding of fashion innovation, particularly through the course’s online virtual studio
  • Develop an advanced knowledge of the relevant past, present and/or future practices in fashion, with an advanced understanding of key concepts in the context of culture, creativity and innovation
  • Critically explore at an advanced level the interdisciplinary practice of fashion and the development of new concepts, emerging methodologies, ethical practices, sustainability and commercial strategies
  • Establish intellectual debate and make original propositions in the context of fashion and the way in which these can be articulated and disseminated

The course consists of three 60 credit modules, each of which is contained within a semester. The modules will be delivered through blended learning with an intensive block of delivery over six - seven days at MediaCityUK and other appropriate venues, supported through the virtual studio.

This module enables you to identify your place in the context of the contemporary networked fashion industry. The module establishes core research methods and activities in order to allow you to develop an individual approach to your postgraduate studies in parallel with peer-to-peer collaboration. You will be challenged to consider the future of fashion and to explore concepts that are shaping fashion by considering the needs, values and aspirations of emerging and established audiences, and the relationships between the two.
This module facilitates the articulation, development and realisation of a conceptual proposition related to the notion of innovation in fashion. Through a process of research, debate and experimentation, you will cultivate and evaluate your ideas and the direction of your study. You will be encouraged to work both collaboratively and independently, as appropriate to your concept, in order to reflect on contemporary practices and processes.
The purpose of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to research, develop and produce an appropriate intervention framed by emerging and complex issues at the intersection of fashion disciplines and beyond. Interventions are driven by notions of trans-disciplinary thinking, innovation and change. Complex responses are encouraged; the module aims to produce leading thinkers and practitioners who challenge what fashion is.

Entry Requirements

Relevant undergraduate degree, normally at 2:1 or above, and supporting portfolio of practice. Applicants with an undergraduate degree of 2:2 will be considered where a high quality portfolio of practice is presented.

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

English Language Requirements

International applicants must also provide evidence of proficiency in English, in the form of IELTS 6.5 overall band score with no less than 5.5 in any band.

All modules are core to all course awards and allow for award specialist practice and learning outcomes to be pursued in an award-specific mode.  

The course is delivered with a blended learning approach to allow flexibility for a wide range of students. Each module will incorporate an intensive face-to-face learning period where students and staff will come together in one location. The remainder of the module will be experienced through web-based and other distance learning channels, and further face-to-face contact where appropriate and including an Art and Design lecture series a Post Graduate lecture series, group seminars and personal tutorials where possible. Before the course formally commences, and in its early stages, you will be provided with guidance, and subsequent support, on the use and application of e-learning and its related technologies.

Within the intensive learning period teaching and learning formats include seminars, workshops, tutorials, situated learning and independent learning. Group critique of student work will feature at this time in order to provide formative feedback. You will be encouraged to develop your own opportunities for ‘live’ engagement and to work in collaboration with staff to develop placement opportunities. The course aims to develop an environment that allows you to progressively take ownership and direction of your learning so that you may develop as independent, life-long learner. The notion of self direction is at the core of each module to ensure you continually negotiate your learning and assessment requirements.  

Through regular group learning experiences (virtual and face-to-face) you will be able to develop and advance your knowledge and skills in a multidisciplinary learning environment. This will foster a developing community of learners, where you take charge of your individual learning, supported by your peers and under the guidance of specialised staff who will act as facilitators within the learning process. Regular formative feedback will be provided through online/virtual means which will focus on tutor-student dialogue and peer-to-peer feedback.  

With the broad subject coverage of the modules, the course aims to develop a learning environment that encourages interaction among students with different approaches to fashion. This allows you to learn from your peers and to further develop inter- and multidisciplinary projects appropriate to your career interests.

Fiona Velez-Colby – MA Fashion Innovation Programme Leader and Award Leader for Entrepreneurship, Communication and Digital

Fiona is an experienced HE teaching professional, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is able to bring her experiences as a practicing designer into her work on the programme. Since arriving at Salford in 2008 she has developed her subject specialism of Design Management to now include Innovation, Design Strategy, Business and Marketing, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Ethics and Sustainability. Her graduates can be found working across a broad range of creative activities including fashion, marketing, teaching and freelance both as frontline designers and as design managers.

Bashir Aswat - Award Leader for Design and Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Fashion Design

Bashir’s areas of expertise include conceptual development of design ideas, creative pattern cutting and draping.

Bashir is an experienced lecturer and fashion designer. He has worked in several countries and develops lines for his own fashion label which operates in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia.

Bashir has been teaching fashion students in the UK for the last 12 years. He joined the University in 2006 and has established an excellent reputation for the undergraduate fashion course. Under his direction the course has won:
