Course Summary

You can take this course as a single module for continuing professional development.

This module will explore:

  • Normal fetal development/anatomy and physiology of specific systems
  • Transitional events in the newborn period
  • Normal morphology of the newborn
  • Genetic overview: common chromosomal abnormalities
  • Effectiveness of screening programmes
  • Normal development of the infant
  • Clinical examination: recognition of the abnormal
  • Identification and management of congenital abnormalities
  • Clinical examination: recognition of the abnormal
  • Communication
  • Referral systems and local guidelines
  • Holistic approach to the care of the newborn and family
  • Professional, ethical and legal issues

Entry Requirements

  • Have current professional registration in the UK
  • Be employed in an appropriate clinical setting and have the written consent of your manager to use the clinical area as a learning environment

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

English Language Requirements

If your first language is not English you must provide evidence of proficiency in English - IELTS 6.5 band score or above are proof of this.

Applying for postgraduate Health and Social Care single modules

All applications for post qualifying heath and social care modules are made directly to the University, please complete the appropriate application form and send to the University.

Teaching

The module runs for up to two semesters and starts in September and February. The first week focuses on administration and reviewing the routine examination of the newborn undertaken by each practitioner. The second week is spent at the University, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Thereafter, the taught weeks involve one morning or afternoon each week.

Assessment

  • 3,000 word essay
  • 30 minute Viva Voce
