Newborn Life Support
In 1999, the Resuscitation Council (UK) New-born Life Support (NLS) was launched. This course helps provide clear, practical and theoretical knowledge. The course is presented by Honorary Professor, Simon Mitchell, the New-born Life Support (NLS) Provider course has been developed, under the auspices of the Resuscitation Council, to provide clear practical instruction in airway support and the theoretical background to illustrate its importance in resuscitation of babies at birth.
This NLS course is designed for any healthcare professional involved in the delivery and care of the new-born infant. This includes both junior and senior medical and nursing staff, midwives, paramedics and resuscitation officers. All applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for a professional healthcare qualification.

Many people have the skill and knowledge but are unsure of their own skills, having never had to use it. Others need to acquire a basic understanding of the important factors which make new-born resuscitation different from adult resuscitation. Others need reminding of certain aspects of their everyday practice and some need to be reassured of mistaken concepts.
Understanding the physiology is fundamental, so there is a considerable emphasis on this throughout the duration of the course. Practical skills are taught in a way that provides hands on experience and hopefully enough time to practise and gain confidence. Simulations are a powerful tool for integrating the knowledge gained in simulated situations, however, they can be perceived as threatening by those unfamiliar with them.
The course is an informative experience. It is the enthusiasm of Professor Mitchell which will define the candidates’ perception of the day and their appreciation of the knowledge gained. At the end of the course the Resuscitation Council (UK) hopes that candidates will understand the physiology underlying the establishment of breathing at birth, that they will also understand the important practical issues of airway management and external cardiac compressions, and that they will have had some practise in using the tools they will encounter when performing these tasks in the real world.
Even though this course includes both a theoretical test of knowledge and a practical test of skills those who have successfully completed the course should not consider themselves competent to cover a labour ward unsupervised. However, the course will have equipped them to maximise their learning opportunity afforded by this experience and enhancing their skill set.
Tutor - Simon Mitchell
Simon Mitchell is consultant neonatologist at St Mary’s Hospital Manchester and honorary professor at University of Salford. After undergraduate medical training in Dundee he completed postgraduate training in paediatrics and neonatology in London, Oxford, Birmingham and Toronto. MD awarded for thesis exploring genetic aspects in cerebral palsy. Interests include neonatal ventilation & respiratory support, neonatal resuscitation, care of the well newborn and medicolegal aspects of neonatology, particularly perinatal asphyxia and causation in perinatally acquired brain injury.

- Approach the management of a new-born infant during the first 10-20 minutes in a competent manner
- Understand the processes underlying apnoea, bradycardia and poor condition at birth
- Delivering practical airway management and ventilator support
- Developing a framework for precise recording and effective communication of important details of the baby's condition at birth and the response to resuscitation
- Demonstrating in a test situation the core skills of airway management of a new-born infant and to show that they know what steps to take if initial attempts at management are unsuccessful, both when alone and when working as part of a team
- To allow candidates to learn fundamental skills in the management of the new-born airway including strategies to help in situations where the initial attempt at lung inflation is unsuccessful, using the practical airway test
- Providing practical experience in appropriate handling of the equipment used in resuscitation. This is assessed during the skill stations
- To be able to perform under supervision the following skills: Airway management and lung inflation, Direct laryngoscopic inspection of the oropharynx, Chest compressions, Umbilical venous access
