The Ionising Radiation Regulations 2000 require that all personnel working with radiation should be properly trained in its safe and effective use. During dental practice, dental nurses, therapists and hygienists are frequently requested by the dentist to take radiographs of patients. It is to the advantage of all concerned that the dental professional should be trained to the highest possible level, thus ensuring that the radiographs produced are of a high diagnostic standard and that they are taken with the minimum possible radiation dose.
* National Examining Board for Dental Nurses Certificate or equivalent qualification recognised by the GDC
* Participants must be a GDC Registered Dental Nurse, Hygienist or Therapist.
Dental hygienists and therapists with similar qualifications and clinical experience may also be eligible.
The workshops will take place over a period of 5 days, you will then undertake 6 months of professional practice to build a portfolio for submission. A written exam will take place 6 months after the workshops.
Before the student is allowed to take the final course assessments, the dental radiography tutor must declare him/her clinically competent in the workplace. The course assessment comprises two elements: a written examination and a portfolio including the record of practical training.
The written examination includes a compulsory section, which must be passed in order for the candidate to be awarded an overall pass.
Students will also be required to arrange visits to other clinical placements (where the range of experience is not available at their own place of work).
This activity meets the educational criteria required for verifiable Continued Professional Development under the General Dental Council Lifelong Learning scheme and represents 30 hours of verifiable CPD, upon successful completion of the course candidates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance awarded by the Directorate of Radiography.
