Missed opportunities: Module design to meet the learning and access needs of practitioners
Practice and academic partners working collaboratively to evaluate a bespoke Work Based Learning module for rehabilitation nurses.
Funder: Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Widening Participation Fund, University of Salford
This collaborative study met the shared concern of academics and practice partners to optimise the professional development of registered nurses working in rehabilitation settings. For many nurses working in these areas, involvement in post-registration professional development had traditionally been avoided or difficult to access. Nurses themselves reported feeling overlooked. Discussions with the Flexible Learning Team within the University highlighted a shared recognition of the potential for work based learning approaches to meet the needs of rehabilitation nurses.
A pilot work based learning module was tailored for rehabilitation nurses. This bespoke, elongated module utilising self-selected assessment methods and a virtual learning environment was employed with an original cohort of 12 students. Evaluation was inbuilt from the outset and captured views of various stakeholders and identified immediate and longer term outcomes. Perceived impact on the students and their clinical practice was significant, suggesting that under certain conditions, WBL can greatly enhance professional development of participants.

Young people and alcohol consumption - developing place-specific interventions.
In this project we wanted to find out what it is like for some young people living in Salford in terms of leisure and social activity. We worked with students and staff from Salford Schools, and with other young participants to find out their views of leisure in Salford, using photos, artwork and geographical mapping in combination with one to one and focus group discussion. This project was led by Dr Carolyn Downs, Salford Business School.

The process of change, from learning to practice implementation, in relation to professional practice delivery and patient care, an evaluation. The aims of the study were to evaluate the process of change from learning to implementation in relation to practice delivery and patient care.
The outcomes were; to identify the main determinants for successful implementation of learning into practice and ensuing quality of patient care; to identify the main barriers that prevent the successful implementation of learning into practice and ensuing quality of patient care; to inform health and social care organisations of processes and procedures that can improve service delivery based on prior learning.
