Education for Practice and Health

We are committed to the provision of good quality, evidence based education, underpinned by rigorous research and evaluation. We are developing an evidence base for what we teach nurses and midwives, how we teach them and how their learning impacts upon professional practice and care delivery and management.

British Council funding under the auspices of the PMI2 Connect scheme will enable us to internationalise our research, working with colleagues from Fujian Medical University, China, to enhance nurse employability and expertise in the global context.

We also believe that health service users, carers and others have a right to good quality health information and support, in an accessible format, and which takes account of diverse needs. Given the current socio-economic and demographic context such information and support is necessary to sustain independent living, health promotion and enhanced quality of life. We use education and evaluative strategies to translate our beliefs into actions, combining the application of learning technologies and digital media with service user involvement in our research.

Our work is organised around the following streams:

  • Evidence based education and practice impact
  • Work based learning
  • Learning and health technologies

Our developing profile is enhanced by the fact that we have past and present journal Editors in the School; Professor Martin Johnson for Nurse Education Today and Karen Holland for Nurse Education in Practice. Maria Grant is Editor of the Health Information and Libraries Journal, Julie Wray is Co Editor of The Practising Midwife and Nick Hardiker is Editor-in-Chief of Informatics for Health and Social Care.

Staff serve on a variety of Editorial Boards, act as peer reviewers for journals and they have published nursing and midwifery texts which have an impact upon students’ preparation for professional practice.
