Dr Nancy-Jane Smith
Associate Head of School, International
I lead the School's internationalisation agenda, focusing upon the development of international partnerships, the quality of the student academic experience, and the development of programmes which equip students with the knowledge and skills for the international context.
Previous roles in the School include Programme Leader for the DProf (Health & Social Care) and I have worked across undergraduate and post graduate programmes as module leader.
I have previously served as School/College member for a number of University Committees, for example University Research Ethics Committee, Post Graduate Research Awards Board.
My clinical nursing experience relates to general surgery and burns and plastic surgery.
This includes pre-registration and post graduate programmes, for example Cultural Awareness in Health Care Practice (Pre-Registration), and the MSc Nursing programme, for example Critically Exploring Professional Practice.
I teach on the successful professional doctorate programme, DProf (Health & Social Care), for example the Practitioner Researcher module.
My previous Programme Leader roles, as professional doctorate Programme Leader and also within the pre-registration undergraduate nursing programmes has given me experience of programme design, management and evaluation, and a good working knowledge of programme approval, regulatory and quality assurance issues.
I am a member of the College Programme and Partnerships Approval Committee.
I have held a variety of external examiner roles within the UK, for pre registration nursing, post graduate taught, and professional doctorate programmes, and have served as external member on a number of professional doctorate programme approval/validation panels.
I act as research supervisor for a number of doctoral students and have approximately 5 doctoral completions, including PhD and DProf. I have published a number of papers about professional doctorates and a professional doctorate student text.
I have acted as external examiner for a number of PhD and professional doctorate viva panels across the UK, and actively serve as Independent Chair across the University.
My PhD explored internationalization and the student experience and this expertise is transferable into my current School role as AHI. Areas of research include evidence based education and evaluation, internationalization of nursing and nurse education, and professional doctorate evaluation.
Examples of completed research projects include a PMI2 Connect funded systematic literature search and synthesis related to global nurse employability, with colleagues in our School and Fujian Medical University, China; and an education evaluation of continuing professional development for nurses and other health care professionals.
