Biography

Professor Steven M Shardlow is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK) and a registered social worker (England). Since 2001 has been the foundation holder of the Chair in Social Work at the University of Salford.  Professor Shardlow has worked as a social work practitioner and manager.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Work. (www.sagepub.co.uk/jsw)

Previously, he was Chairperson of The Association of Teachers of Social Work Education (ATSWE- UK) and UK representative on the Executive Committee of the European Association of Schools of Social Work (EASSW). He has worked extensively in international social work, through research, consultancy and development work. Professor Shardlow has published widely, including fifteen books, and his work has been translated into several languages

Research Supervision

Professor Shardlow has previously successfully supervised PhDs in the UK and overseas on a broad range of topics in social work. His methodological interests include cross-national comparative research methods, qualitative methods and mixed methods. He welcomes applications from potential research students who are looking to explore a wide range of aspects of social work.

Teaching

Professor Shardlow teaches undergraduate postgraduate programmes, and doctorial level.

He has held visiting professorial appointments, where he has taught, at the University of Trento, Italy; University of Nordland, Norway; and City University Hong Kong & The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong - where he is currently Honorary Professor in Social Work.

Research Interests

His current research includes the following areas: knowledge for professional practice (programme evaluation) that enhances evidence-based policy and practice, particularly in respect of social work with children and families and older people to promote research utilisation by practitioners and policy makers; applied professional ethics; the human services workforce (retention and professional education-with a focus on field education). Much of his work is conducted using comparative research methodologies.

Currently, he is undertaking, in partnership with the Universities of Bristol and Kings College London a three-year countrywide study in England of early career social workers which has been funded by the Children’s Workforce Development Council and the Department for Education, and is principal investigator in the UK for a two year ESRC funded project that is exploring the social connections between the Chinese community in the UK and in Hong Kong in collaboration with City University Hong Kong.
