Biography

I joined the University of Salford in 1995 as a Lecturer of Midwifery following its merger with the NHS Northern College of Nursing and Midwifery. I have spent 29 years in midwifery practice, education and research. I have lead midwifery education through the roles of programme leader, module leader and clinical link tutor.

Current role and responsibilities

My main responsibilities are in Pre Registration Midwifery Education and in Post qualifying/Postgraduate studies, in particular as joint module leader for the critical care in childbearing module. I am an experienced Chair of Boards of Examiners within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.

Teaching

My academic interests focus on midwifery theory and practice and the implementation of teaching strategies which enhance clinical decision making and referral in acute maternal illness. I am an Acute Illness Management (AIM) trainer. I teach at every level on undergraduate and taught postgraduate midwifery programmes.

I supervise postgraduate students. I have a very active clinical link with Royal Bolton Foundation Trust through which I support midwives with their professional and practice development along with student midwives undertaking clinical placements.

Research Interests

My professional background is in midwifery care and practice. My research interests are in the evaluation of strategies to improve early recognition and management of acute maternal illness within pre registration midwifery education and in postnatal care.
