Biography
I joined the University of Salford in April 2010, which was my first academic appointment. Previously I worked as a child protection social worker and then as practice development worker overseeing the learning of newly qualified social workers. I also worked for four years as a trainer, first as the multi-agency trainer for Manchester Safeguarding Children’s Board and then in a national training role on child trafficking, funded by the Home Office, for ECPAT UK.
Teaching
My academic interests include children’s safeguarding, child trafficking, asylum seeking children and child sexual exploitation. Since starting at the University I have taught undergraduate and postgraduate modules on social work theory, children and family social work, undertaking literature reviews and supervising Masters level dissertations. I also program led the MSC in Comparative Safeguarding, a unique course within the UK.
Research Interests
My professional background is in children and family social work. My research is focussed on safeguarding children who have been trafficked. This includes both children from abroad and UK citizen children, a process often referred to as internal trafficking or child sexual exploitation. I also am interested in the role of systematic reviews in social work methodology. In 2011, I spent 12 days with SCIE (Social Care Institute for Excellence) as a research associate developing further skills in systematic reviewing.
