Biography

Ian is a senior cardiac nurse and academic with over 20 years clinical experience. He is a former President of the British Association for Nursing in Cardiovascular Care, Council member of the British Cardiovascular Society and Nurse Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology.

He has published widely in the field and completed a PhD focussing on the clinical outcomes of cardiac patients. He has successfully managed a number of funded research projects which have included the needs of the carers of cardiac patients, the end of life needs of heart failure patients and the users views of cardiac nurses

He has benefited from a number of grants from the British Heart Foundation and other NHS organisations to undertake this important area of work.

Ian is an internationally renowned academic who is regularly invited to present at the annual conferences of a number of national cardiac societies

Teaching

Ian’s academic interests focus on all aspects of cardiovascular nursing. He teaches across the curriculum from pre registration nursing to Doctorate level. His teaching draws upon the findings of his own research studies and his experience as a senior clinician.

He also delivers much of the schools quantitative research method sessions and enjoys engaging with students in discussions around research methods.

Research Interests

Ian’s professional background in cardiology still provides much of the passion for his research activities. However whilst his clinical background is very acute the changing way in which cardiac care is delivered has allowed him to widen his research focus to both acute and chronic care management. He is particularly interested in the patient experience of nursing practice and the evaluation of nursing roles. His full research profile can be found on the Salford Environment for Expertise and Knowledge (SEEK)
