Biography
I initially trained as RGN at the University College Hospital Galway. I then trained as a RMN at Napier University going onto completing my MSc in Nursing and Education at University of Edinburgh. I worked for 4 years as a Community Psychiatric Nurse, qualifying as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapist (IPT). I then undertook research funded by the Scottish Executive evaluating and implementing Telehealth in Child Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) before coming to University of Salford in Oct 2003.
Teaching
My academic interests and expertise focuses on Empowerment, CAMHS, Early Intervention in Psychosis, Recovery, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Telehealth and Research Methodologies. I teach on the School’s undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, and I also supervise postgraduate research students.
Research Interests
My professional background is in mental health care and my research focuses on empowerment and psychosis. I am currently in my final year of my PhD at the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester. My research study aims to develop a Youth Empowerment Scale (YES) for young people with psychosis. There are four phases to this research. Phase 1 qualitatively conceptualised empowerment from the perspective of young people suffering from psychosis. The findings from phase 1 were used to form the development and piloting of YES. The YES was given to adolescents in schools in Phase 2 along with 3 other questionnaires and were subject to statistical testing to ensure validity using factor analysis. Phase 3 looked at what factors contribute to people having a sense of empowerment and how this impacts on their mental wellbeing. Phase 4 is currently looking at validating the YES in a clinical population. My research has also focused on Telehealth in CAMHS, empowerment and enablement within mental health care. My full research profile can be found on the Salford Environment for Expertise and Knowledge (SEEK).
In 2000 I was part of a team who successfully secured £120,000 funding from the Innovation Fund for Children’s Services (Scottish Executive) to implement and evaluate Telehealth in CAMHS in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders.
In 2003 I secured £7,000 from Lothian Primary Care NHS Trust for completion of the Telehealth Project.
