Office Times

Monday 1.00-3.00pm

I have lectured in physiology and research methods at the University of Salford since 1993. In this time I have lectured to a wide range of professional groups: nurses, midwives, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and complementary therapists.

More recently I have changed academic discipline and joined the Counselling and Psychotherapy team and now lecture mainly in 3rd wave behavioural approaches.

It was while at medical school in the early 1980s that I became fascinated by the interaction of psychological states and physical health. I trained in co-counselling while at medical school and began a personal mindfulness practice. After graduating from medical school I began practicing as a stress management consultant and also taught mindfulness practice in educational, community and corporate settings and this work continued after starting my employment at the University of Salford.

I have continued to broaden my training in psychotherapeutic approaches: – I am a counsellor and hypnotherapist and I am an accredited Breathworks Trainer. I have been training since 2009 in 3rd wave behavioural therapies such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.

The focus of my teaching is related to psychotherapeutic interventions; mainly 3rd wave behavioural approaches  such as Mindfulness-Based Approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.

I also teach research methods.

Research Interests

My current area of interest is the evaluation of mindfulness based approaches in primary and community health settings.

I am involved in a pilot study evaluating the use of mindfulness-based approaches for people with Parkinson’s Disease.

I am also in the preliminary stages of exploring the use of mindfulness- and compassion- based approaches in managing obesity and diabetes.
