Steve has a background as a social worker in both statutory and coluntary organisations with children and young people who are in trouble with the criminal law. He also has been involved with child protection and community development work.
A social work academic since 1995, he has led research projects and has authored and co-authored a series of books and articles about violence, sex and solutions. He is currently co-editor (with Professor Vivienne Cree of the University of Edinburgh) of the 'Social Work: Making a Difference' series for Policy Press,
Steve is the university's representative on the Salford Children's Trust Board and the Salford Troubled Families Steering Group.
Steve teaches across the social work and other university under and post-graduate programmes with a particular focus on theory into practice. He has an interest in solution focused approaches and in how risk is constructed within social work policies and practices.
Steve has led an EU funded project to exchange staff and students between the EU and Australia.
Steve has recently completed a small research project with George House Trust to identify the needs of older Gay men living with HIV. In the past he has led or been involved with several funded research projects.
He has an interest in research about violence, sex, risk and safety, particularly with children and young people.
Steve is a proposal and project reviewer for the ESRC, as well as a reviewer for several social work journals and publishers.

Academic Qualifications: BA (Hons) History with Politics; MA (Econ) Social Work and Social Policy; PGCert. Leadership and Collaboration in Safeguarding Children.
