About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be given an orientation to the ward, and given information on neurosurgery in conjunction with the patients with whom they will be working.
A practice placement booklet is provided and assigned to a mentor/assessor.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors/assessors are allocated prior to the students arrival.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Days:- 07.00am - 19.30pm
Nights:- 19.00pm - 07.30am
If at stage in training where they are to do night shifts.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for patients with head injury (with or without haematomas), subarachnoid haemorrhage, cerebral tumours, disc prolapsed - cervical and lumbar, epilepsy, hygiene care, care of the dying, planning discharges, MDT meetings.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Manchester model, based on Roper Logan & Tierney
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Naso-gastric/PEG feeding
- Pre-and post-op care
- Wound care
- Medication specific to neurosurgery
- Urinary catheterisation, male or female
- IV therapy
- Neurological observations
- Care of unconscious patient
- Tracheotomy care
- Evaluation of nursing documentation
- Blood pressure, heart rate, temperature
- Early warning score documents
- Glasgow coma scale
- Saturation (blood) levels.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Care of wounds - removal of sutures, care of NG tubes, care of intravenious lines, indwelling catheters and tracheostomy care.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Students are encouraged to work in the same area for several weeks to enable continuity of patient care.
Students then actively participate in patient care, being supervised according to their level of practice.
Staff encourage students to utilize the learning opportunities presented by CT scan, MR scan, neuro theatres and neuro radiology and neuro high dependency unit to gain insight into other investigations.
Those students wishing to rotate to night duty are encouraged to do so particularly with their mentors.
