About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
On arrival students discuss current level of achievement and any skills they wish to develop specifically. Introduced to ward environment and staff.
Students are advised to read up on neuro-physiology and anatomy prior to commencing allocation.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Two mentors usually allocated to accommodate staff rotation on nights and they are allocated prior to student arrival on the ward. They can change these if they wish.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
7.00am - 13.30pm
13.30pm - 19.30pm
19.00pm - 07.30am
FULL DAYS - 07.00am - 19.30pm
Students can do a maximum of 2 full days per week plus shorter shifts.
Students must telephone the ward and ask to speak to the shift co-ordinator if they are off sick, delayed or there is any other problem.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Caring for patients undergoing treatment and investigation for all neurological problems:
- Subarachnoid haemorrhage
- Brain tumour
- Cognitively impaired patients
- Head injury
- Traction/halo traction
- Non complex spinal surgery
- One-to-one specialling of patients
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Adapted Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Moving and handling of neurologically impaired patient
- Care of tracheostomy, suction, NG/PEG feeds
- Care of patients following angiography
- CT and MR Scans
- Neuro-theatre care
- Care of external ventricular drains
- Neurological observations
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Neurological observation external ventricular drainage
Opportunity to visit all other neurological departments within the Neuroscience Centre e.g. High Dependency, Acute Rehabilitation and Neuro Theatres, Subarachnoid Specialist Nurse, OT, Physio, SALT Dietician, Oncology nurses.
What resources are available to help students learning?
- The student has many opportunities to share good practice in this ward and the whole Neurological Centre.
- Resources are being developed, such as student learning packages and there is access to practice placement facilitators.
- Neuroscience weekly teaching sessions, use of blackboard and I.T facilities/Library facilities
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
There are many projects currently being developed, such as developing research based care plans, care pathways and changes in nursing documentation.
The area is one of several which has been part of a major merger of two Neurological Units in the North West of England. As a result of this there is major development work ongoing in nursing and medical services.
