About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
At your first interview it would be helpful to your mentor/assessor if you have a good idea of your objectives. They will then be able to advise you on areas that they feel are important for you to concentrate on to achieve these goals.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
At the beginning of each shift you be assigned to work with a specific qualified nurse, hopefully your mentor or associate mentor. However due to holidays, internal rotations and leave this may not always be possible.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
07:00 - 19:30 - With two half hour breaks.
19:30 - 07:30 - With a hour and a half break
Note: To ensure you work the required 37.5 hours each week you will be required to also do "make up" shifts.
There are Theatre lists everyday Monday to Friday.Please contact the ward 2 weeks prior to commencement of placement for your off duty.
You will be expected to work weekends (up to 2 weekends in 4) and nights with your mentor (this is not expected of 1st years but can be negotiated for Year 1 Semester 3 if appropriate).
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Caring for patients post operatively who require regular close invasive monitoring
- Patients presenting with epistaxis and tonsillitis
- Care of the patient who has had a neurosurgical operation
- Caring for patients who are undergoing treatment and investigation for specific neurological problems
- Care of the external ventricular drainage system, lumbar drains
- Patients who have undergone spinal surgery.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
H7 use an adapted version of the Roper, Logan and Tierney model. This is implemented via care plans and the way in which care is delivered.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Removal of skin closures
- Removal of nasal packs
- Care of tracheostomy
- Liaising with different members of the MDT
- Moving and handling of the neurologically impaired patient
- NG and PEG/RIG feeds
- Removal of surgical drains
- Clinical observations
- Assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating (APIE Nursing Model)
- Medication Administration
- Patient Admission
- Discharge Planning.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Neurological observations
- Management of own patient case load
- Exposure to breaking of bad news
- Computer skills.
What resources are available to help students learning?
There are many opportunities for you to share good practice in this unit and the whole neurological centre.
At your initial interview you will be given copies of all the documentation we are using on the unit, i.e.: care plans, patient information leaflets (which you should find interesting and informative.)
Theatre pathways and teaching packages prepared by staff on the unit in different aspects of nursing on this ward are also available.
Students have access to the Trusts academic library.
Please remember that your greatest learning resources are the patients and staff.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Throughout your placement allocation you are encouraged to spend sometime in each of the major spoke placements: i.e.: Out-patients, ENT/Neuro Theatre and NHDU and Pre operative assessment.
You may also be able to spend time in Audiology, Speech and language Therapy, dietician department. Whilst on your placement you may decide you want to spend time with the physiotherapist and occupational therapist.
