About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

All students will be allocated a mentor prior to the commencement in practice. The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours in practice

Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional)

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All Students are allocated a mentor to support them in practice, All mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the Live register for mentors held by the Practice Education Facilitators.

In the event of your allocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice.

All qualified staff have the opportunity to study the preparation for mentorship module credited and occasionally you maybe mentored by a trainee mentor, this will be overseen by a qualified mentor in practice

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

Monday to Friday 9am -5pm

The service does not operate at weekends or bank holidays

Experience of working with young people/children with mental health difficulties

Engaging children, young people and their families

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Tidal Model of Nursing

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Assessment, Diagnosing, Planning treatment, reviewing treatment

Introduction to mental health nursing

Experience of working in a sensitive area

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Assessment of mental health and risk

Emotional difficulties, such as anxiety and depression

Severe conduct/behaviour difficulties

ADHD

Difficulties in social functioning, including assessment for autistic spectrum

Eating disorders

Deliberate self-harm

Mood disturbance

Developmental difficulties

Psychosis

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Attachment difficulties

Emotional and mental health difficulties in young people with learning difficulties.

Understanding of the use of medication in CAMHS

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide effective care

School/Education Assessment/observation

Introduction to risk assessments

Observation of ADOS (Autistic Diagnostic Observation Schedule)

Observation of Choice Clinic

Observation of ADHD clinic

Observation of on call risk assessment

Observation and awareness record keeping

Additional Information

Placement Speciality

The core business of CAMHS is the specialist assessment and treatment of serious mental health disturbances and associated risk in children and young people between the ages of five and 18 who live in Bolton.

Dress code

Students are not expected to wear uniform but are expected to dress smart casual and wear their ID badges at all times. Anybody attending placement in inappropriate clothing will be sent home to change immediately.
